“Wacha nikuwe open na nyinyi mimi nimetoka from a very poor Background.” ~ Emotional Dem wa Facebook opens up on her painful yet inspiring journey to success

Popular content creator Dem wa Facebook has opened up about her life in an emotional narration that has left many Kenyans inspired. In a heartfelt message, she revealed the difficult childhood, relentless struggles, and deep sacrifices that shaped the woman she is today.

According to her, nothing about her journey has been easy. She was born and raised in a humble background in Kitale, where her family survived through casual farm labour. Their daily routine revolved around doing vibarua on maize farms just to put food on the table. Despite the harsh realities, she excelled in primary school—only for her dreams of joining high school to be shattered by lack of school fees.

“My parents really wanted the best for me, but hawakuwa na uwezo,” she recalled.

Even without access to formal education at the time, she refused to let poverty define her. She turned her attention to football, a passion that unexpectedly opened her first financial breakthrough. When she received her first-ever cash reward of KSh 35,000, she didn’t spend it on herself. Instead, she used the money to buy her parents a dairy cow—a gesture she says gave her life meaning.

Later, when she finally joined college, her struggles intensified. Balancing school with survival became a daily battle. To make ends meet, she hawked fish, worked night shifts as a watchman, and took on any job she could find just to afford rent, upkeep, and school expenses.

“I have done everything legal to survive. Nilikuwa nahustle mchana na usiku. I didn’t want my dreams to die,” she shared.

Her rise to social media fame came with its own challenges. While many celebrated her online presence, others relentlessly ridiculed her appearance, her dressing, and even her background. She admits the bullying sometimes became too much to bear.

“Watu wamenitusi sana… wanasema uso imeparara, eti sijui kuvaa. But I kept going because I knew where I came from and where I want to go.”

Despite the negativity, she remained focused—especially on her biggest mission: making her family happy.

She also expressed deep gratitude to comedian and media personality Obinna, whom she credits for standing by her and offering guidance during crucial moments of her growth.

Beyond her personal success, she has managed to support the construction of her parents’ house back in Kitale. Although well-wishers contributed, she proudly revealed that 90% of the project was funded by her own hard-earned money—money made through sleepless nights, endless hustle, and unwavering determination.

“Watu wamenisaidia, yes, but majority imekuwa nguvu yangu. Nimehangaika lakini Mungu amenitoa mbali.”

Her story, though painful, is a testament to resilience. From hawking fish and guarding buildings at night, to becoming a recognizable digital personality, Dem wa Facebook has proven that no background is too poor to produce greatness.

Her dream remains simple but powerful:

“Mission yangu ni kumake my family happy.”
